“When I listen to the ALIEN EP, I hear a ruthlessly confident, powerful, silly individual who is searching for acceptance and a sense of belonging. At the end of the creation of this EP, I’ve reached the conclusion that I belong both everywhere and nowhere at the same time. And because I’m an Aquarius, I love that. All the songs are so different, with characters of their own, but I hear me and I know that each of these tracks is a small capture of who I am (at this point in time anyway)” – Venice Qin

Born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa to parents from Mainland China, Qin carved the early parts of her musical identity rooted in the limbo of belonging between two cultures and never fully fitting in either. Music became a way to express herself and find solace in the chaos of adolescence before a late teens epiphany that her future was not in a predefined box. Venice was drawn to the quirks of artists including Lady Gaga and Caroline Polachek, who encouraged her to embrace the intersection of her identity and explore her creativity fearlessly - and yes - part of that exploration is dying your hair bright blue. This journey of self-discovery intercepted the sonic realm of her music, ultimately leading Venice to a uniquely honest version of hyper-pop, a sound born from a subculture of misfits and trailblazers who have fearlessly pushed the boundaries of music and aesthetics over a similar timeline to that of Venice’s self-discovery.
