Sauber Mercedes C11 Group C ex Michael Schumacher, 730Hp V8 Twin-Turbo Engine Warm-Up & Race Action!

With this 1989 Sauber Mercedes C11, we dip into the past, during the legendary era of group C cars. Specifically, the 89.C11.00 chassis model you see is the original prototype; it never competed at the time. Instead, it was used as a test car to develop racing models. It was driven extensively during the period by works pilots Michael Schumacher, Mauro Baldi, Jean Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass, Heinz H. Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger. The car belonged to Peter Sauber, who, after having kept it for a long time, decided to sell it to the current owners. The latter has once again prepared to participate in the competitions of the recent European championship dedicated to Group C cars with excellent results. I had the pleasure of seeing it in action at Spa Francorchamps in 2017 and at Monza in 2019. The vehicle is powered by the 5-litre Mercedes-Benz M119 V8 engine with 2x KKK turbochargers capable of developing over 730 hp at 7,000 rpm min, but 950 hp could also be reached in qualifying. The engine torque is 820 Nm at 3,500 rpm, and the gearbox is 5-speed; rear wheel drive. Thanks to a carbon fibre monocoque frame and a kevlar/carbon fibre bodywork, the car weighs only 900 kg. The suspension features a wishbone layout with push rod-type shock absorbers. The C11 model proved highly competitive, so much so that it won 8 out of 9 races held in 1990, thus leading the pilots Mauro Baldi and Jean-Louis Schlesser to become world champions. Con questa Sauber Mercedes C11 del 1989 facciamo un tuffo nel passato, nella mitica era delle vetture gruppo C. Nello specifico il modello telaio 89.C11.00 che vedete risulta il prototipo originale, all'epoca non ha mai gareggiato. E' stato utilizzato come vettura test per sviluppare i modelli da gara e durante il periodo è stata ampiamente guidata dai piloti ufficiali Michael Schumacher, Mauro Baldi, Jean Louis Schlesser, Jochen Mass, Heinz H. Frentzen e Karl Wendlinger. L'auto apparteneva a Peter Sauber che dopo averla conservata per lungo tempo ha deciso di venderla agli attuali proprietari. Questi ultimi l'hanno nuovamente preparata per partecipare alle competizioni dell'attuale campionato europeo dedicato alle vetture di Gruppo C con ottimi risultati. Ho avuto il piacere di vederla in azione a Spa Francorchamps nel 2017 ed a Monza nel 2019. La vettura è mossa dal motore V8 Mercedes-Benz M119 di 5-litri sovralimentato tramite 2 turbocompressori KKK in grado di sviluppare oltre 730 cv a 7.000 giri/min ma si poteva arrivare anche a 950 cv in qualifica. La coppia motrice è di 820 Nm a 3.500 giri/min ed il cambio è a 5 rapporti; la trazione posteriore. Grazie anche ad un telaio monoscocca in fibra di carbonio ed una carrozzeria in kevlar e fibra di carbonio l'auto pesa complessivamente 900Kg. Le sospensioni presentano uno schema a triangoli sovrapposti con ammortizzatori di tipo push rod. Il modello C11 si dimostra estremamente competitivo tanto da vincere 8 gare su 9 disputate nel 1990 portando così i piloti Mauro Baldi e Jean-Louis Schlesser a diventare campioni del mondo.
