Pittsburgh Pirates Select RHP Paul Skenes with 1st Pick in 2023 MLB Draft

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected RHP Paul Skenes from LSU. The right-hander has been said to be the best pitching prospect since Stephen Strasburg in 2009.

Featuring a fastball that averages 98 mph and has touched 102 mph with a flat angle and carry that make it even more difficult to hit than the sheer velocity would indicate, he’s also got a devastating slider and a solid power changeup.

Skenes spent his first two collegiate seasons with Air Force and pitched two summers with Team USA before joining LSU and helping the Tigers win the 2023 College World Series. He was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year, and led NCAA Division I in strikeouts (209), strikeouts per nine innings (15.3) and WHIP (0.75).
