'Antarctican Dream Machine', the instrumental album I recorded during my time in Antarctica with Greenpeace aboard the Arctic Sunrise ship, is out now. In short, the album was created over 3 weeks on a ship sailing Antarctica. A side-step from what you and I recognise as ‘Novo Amor’, this records purpose was to capture the inspiration I had over those 21 days and nothing more. To create something quickly and instinctively without overanalysing the process. It is what it is because I am where I am, and that’s enough.
The horizon helps to quell the motion sickness, and motion here is constant, until it’s not. Then you really see where you are. Sound is a full-body rumble, almost as constant as the motion. When I’m not on deck, or being propelled across the water, joining the search of Adélie penguins, I lay down, because height for sitting is not afforded to those in the top bunk. I enjoy it. I have a steady view of the bullseye, an unwavering eye on the skyline. You need to be able to see the horizon.

I am unique in my opportunity, position, and perspective, a musician among those with purpose: the scientist, the engineer, the radio operator, the filmmaker, the cook, the artist. Alone, together, some sitting, some laying, all swaying. Where we are is unnamed. We’re not on Google Maps. Trees don’t exist in a polar desert. The water will kill you, easily, quickly, indifferently.

Has anyone ever before recorded an album on a ship sailing the Antarctic? Some work, some read. I write, inspired by my surroundings, the tranquil, textured desolation, the scrolling exhibition of ice sculpture that exists now and never again.

The album’s ten tracks are recorded mainly in my cabin, at a small desk and on my bunk. I share the cabin with the ship’s 2nd engineer, a kind and funny Korean man a few years older than me. He looks out for me and shares stories about his world, a world that I am suddenly thrown into, in this cabin, on this ship, 3.5 miles above the ocean floor. My world is in my headphones and on my laptop screen. And so I go there. With limited resources, I feel motivated by the passing of time and circumstance, compelled to capture these feelings of freedom, of opportunity, of gratitude, of unreality, aboard the Artic Sunrise.
