Return of the Jedi: Ewan McGregor to reprise role as #ObiWanKenobi

Ewan McGregor’s eagerness to return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character he first played in 1999’s The Phantom Menace prequel, has long been documented.

But it now looks as if his wish will come true, as Disney has commissioned a big-budget series developing the adventures of the Jedi master. Originally, the studio had been planning a standalone movie for the character, but this evolved into a show – as was also the case for Boba Fett, subject of the forthcoming Mandalorian series.

It seems very likely that the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series will be set during the character's self-imposed exile to Tatooine. Certainly, there's some evidence that was Lucasfilm's plan for the spinoff movie; it reportedly had a working title of "Joshua Tree," an amusing nod to a U2 album that featured a cover with Zabriskie Point in Southern California's Death Valley. That location was used for some of the Tatooine scenes in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, so the working title seemed more than a little appropriate. If the Disney+ TV series really is an adaptation of the film script, then it too can be expected to explore life on the desert planet. It will be interesting to see how a Jedi who's used to deciding the fate of worlds settles down to live an isolated life on a backwater, crime-ridden planet. No doubt the transition was a very difficult one for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor played the character immortalised in the first trilogy by Alec Guinness in three prequels: The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). He also made a voice-only cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

Aside from the Obi-Wan series, there’s plenty of Star Wars action on the horizon. Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker will premiere on December 20, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on his own trilogy of films, and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will launch the first film in their Star Wars series in 2022.
