Norwegian artist Hedda Mae has been quietly working away over the last couple of years, but has kept her powder dry when it comes to revealing music, with only Norway’s concert-goers at a couple of live shows catching a glimpse of the songs she’s been cooking up in her hometown of Bergen. That’s all set to change, as she steps into limelight properly this year with slots at prestigious showcase festivals like by:Larm. And of course, presents some music, with the first taste of her work coming in the form of debut single, the pop-as-playground adventure of “Pride Goes Before A Fall”. “Pride…” is a powerful postcard from Hedda Mae’s musical world, and a song that carries all the trademarks of her style. This is pop music spring-loaded with energy, music that sparkles and fizzles with swagger and sway. Hedda’s songwriting style tips a bunch of genres, from early 00’s R’n’B to power-pop to breezy funk, into a pot and brews them together into an infectious, tumbling hit, with melodies that acrobatically dance around each other. Pair that with the sheer amount of personality she pours into the song, as she dispatches a person whose own ego is about to lead to their downfall, and it makes “Pride” a song that’s irresistibly fun. Hedda says: “The main concept of “Pride Goes Before A Fall” is that what you do to others will eventually fall back on yourself. It’s another way of saying ‘Karma’s a bitch’. The song, like most of the songs I have written is inspired by events from my life. The frustration of being pushed around when you really just want to be left alone. I wrote this song together with Benjamin Giörtz. We were really in the middle of another song, and were looking for drum samples. We found a flute sound that we both dug, and soon we had a new song – “Pride Goes Before A Fall”. It was like the song wrote itself. “We’ve been working so much behind the scenes, without people knowing what this project really is. So I’m really looking forward to revealing what we’ve created! I’m excited to see how the music will be received, and I think we have made something that stands out today!”
