Soprano Emily Pogorelc and pianist Chris Reynolds perform “Summer Night, Riverside” by award-winning New York-based composer and pianist Andrew Hsu. This is one of his Teasdale Songs of 2015, a collection of settings of poems by the American writer Sara Teasdale (1884-1933). The song begins with memories of fragrant, starlit nights by the river. Emily’s voice soars, clear and bell-like as she brings these lines to life, then takes on a more hushed tone as we realise the narrator is looking back on her far-off past. The beautifully played piano line perhaps suggests the river flowing endlessly on, as lovers come and go.
