Daniil Trifonov - Stravinsky: I. Danse russe (Trois mouvements de Petrouchka)

Jagged rythms and rustic Russian folk sounds further electrified Diaghilev and Sztravinsky's successor to 'The Firebird', 'Petrushka', presented by the Balletts Russes in Paris in 1911. "Like 'The Firebird'", says Trifnov, "'Petrushka is based on a familiar trope in Russian culture - the celebration marking the arrival of the Spring Fair, which dates back to pagan times. Yet 'Petrushka' is a more philosophical work. Unlike 'The Firebird', which ends in triumph, 'Petrushka' is a tragic story, dealing with innocence, brutality, fate and despair - complex emotional themes resonating deep in Russian psyche - reflected upon Stravinsky in a rational modern light."

Daniil Trifonov’s new album, Silver Age, recorded with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra, recalls a time when Russia’s composers, poets, artists, dramatists and star performers were among the most original anywhere in the world. It illustrates the artistic audacity and brilliance of a turbulent era in the country’s history with works by three of its most pioneering composers:
Scriabin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in F sharp minor Op.20, Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor Op.16 and Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka. The tracklist also comprises Stravinsky's “Danse russe” from the 'Trois mouvements de Petrouchka'.
