Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage): A set of three suites for solo piano by Franz Liszt, is widely considered as the masterwork of Liszt's musical style. Just as the character of Wilhelm Meister develops as he embarks on his journey, Franz Liszt takes his travel experiences as an occasion for new compositions.

Unquestionably a globetrotter in a sense, Daniel Barenboim, one of the most prominent musicians in the world, who regularly tours around the world as conductor – Italy included – pays his tribute to the nation this time with Liszt’s second suite "Deuxième année: Italie" ("Second Year: Italy"), and perhaps not surprisingly, as a solo pianist.

The pianist-conductor, who is a recognised expert on Liszt, combines the technical and poetic elements of one of the most gratifying Romantic piano compositions in this first live instrumental recital recording at Italy's most iconic opera venue.
