Cameron Shahbazi sings a popular gem from the folk repertoire. The origins of Black is the Colour of my True Love’s Hair are lost in the mists of time – it could be a traditional Scottish song, or it might come from the Appalachians. Ashok Gupta’s new arrangement for countertenor and piano pares the song back to its melancholy essentials – a single verse framed by two renditions of the chorus. Shahbazi conveys the wistful lyrics with beauty and moments of drama, sensitively accompanied by pianist Sarah Tysman.
