Albrecht Mayer discovered the music of J.S. Bach at the age of 8, as a choirboy at Bamberg Cathedral. Within a couple of years he was able to play some of the composer’s simpler keyboard pieces on the piano. “Even then,” he recalls, “I could feel this transcendent image of his music going through my veins.” The more he studied Bach the more he loved his writing. As he notes, however, its power does not require specialist knowledge. “You can dive very deep into his music, but even when you have no idea about it, it still speaks to your heart.” In recent years, Mayer’s research has focused on the wider Bach family – this album is based on the thread of genius that runs through the different generations to produce works that embrace the styles of the late-Renaissance, Baroque and Classical eras.

The members of Bach’s family also made music at home and there is no doubt that these domestic concerts will often have included the aria Bist du bei mir by Bach’s colleague as kapellmeister, Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, which Bach’s wife, Anna Magdalena, transcribed into her Notenbüchlein.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Virtuosi wowed the Musikverein.” (Die Presse) As part of a European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today’s finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist’s 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter’s latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach to André Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s extraordinary gifts were instantly recognised by Herbert von Karajan when she auditioned for him at the age of 13. The legendary conductor became her trusted mentor in the early years of her hugely successful international career. Mutter has since gone on to adopt a significant mentoring role herself, supporting young musicians through the foundation she established in 1997. In 2011, she set up Mutter’s Virtuosi, whose continually changing membership primarily comprises current and former recipients of Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarships. Under her leadership, it tours widely, premieres new works and gives benefit concerts, thus both reflecting Mutter’s own priorities and offering its players a well-rounded introduction to the life of a professional musician. “Music moves us only when it tells a story”, Mutter says. “And I’m on the trail of the next generations of storytellers.”

Long before the greatness of Gustav Mahler's music became undisputed in the concert world, Leonard Bernstein championed the Austrian composer's work with incomparable intensity. The Spanish violinist María Dueñas presents her debut album with one of the most musically demanding and emotionally profound works in the repertoire – Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. “You can’t rely on virtuosity in Beethoven’s concerto; you have to reveal yourself,” says María Dueñas. And that can only be done through sound.” Recorded live at Vienna’s Musikverein with the Wiener Symphoniker and Manfred Honeck it is now the opening work on her Deutsche Grammophon debut album, Beethoven and Beyond. Featuring her own newly written cadenzas for each movement, the recording reveals María Dueñas as both performer and composer.

As noted by Spanish music magazine Codalario in a review of one of her January 2023 performances at the Musikverein, Dueñas’s strength of personality emerged to the full when, during the first movement, she stepped away from tradition to offer her own cadenza. “It was like a breath of fresh air,” wrote the critic, “revealing her beautiful sound, with double and triple stops, rich trills and, above all, despite its modernity, an enormous respect for the essence of Beethoven.”

María Dueñas, who has been studying in Vienna with the world-renowned Professor Boris Kuschnir for several years, won first prize with her interpretation of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto at the final of the Viktor Tretyakov International Violin Competition in September 2021. By then, DG had already invited her to record the work on the strength of a performance given earlier that year with the Dresdner Philharmoniker and Marek Janowski. “Beethoven’s Violin Concerto has accompanied me during the most important moments of my life,” notes Dueñas. “The move from Germany to Vienna on the recommendation of my mentor Maestro Vladimir Spivakov, my education, and now the recording – Beethoven has always played a part.” She is particularly pleased to have recorded the work with Manfred Honeck, another of her mentors.

Celebrated for his visionary interpretations of J.S. Bach, Víkingur Ólafsson, one of the greatest pianists and musical minds of today, now embraces Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations. Ólafsson devotes his entire next season to touring the work globally across six continents, while October 2023 marks the anticipated album release on Deutsche Grammophon. “I have dreamed of recording this work for 25 years,” says the Icelandic pianist.

The album follows Ólafsson’s hugely successful DG recording of works by the composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (2018), which won BBC Music magazine’s Album of the Year, Opus Klassik’s Solo Recital award, numerous other recording of the year accolades and led to him being named Gramophone magazine’s Artist of the Year. Now Ólafsson brings his unique musical vision, and an affecting, meticulous recorded sound to Bach’s masterpiece. It marks the first time Ólafsson records a complete work and he begins with one of the most demanding in the piano repertoire.

Ólafsson dedicates his 2023-24 season to a Goldberg Variations world tour, performing the work across six continents throughout the year. He brings Bach’s masterpiece to major concert halls including London’s Southbank Centre, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Harpa Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, LA’s Walt Disney Hall, Sala São Paulo, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Tonhalle Zurich, KKL Luzern, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Mupa Budapest and Teatro Colón, to name a few.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Virtuosi wowed the Musikverein.” (Die Presse) As part of a European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today’s finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist’s 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter’s latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach to André Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s extraordinary gifts were instantly recognised by Herbert von Karajan when she auditioned for him at the age of 13. The legendary conductor became her trusted mentor in the early years of her hugely successful international career. Mutter has since gone on to adopt a significant mentoring role herself, supporting young musicians through the foundation she established in 1997. In 2011, she set up Mutter’s Virtuosi, whose continually changing membership primarily comprises current and former recipients of Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarships. Under her leadership, it tours widely, premieres new works and gives benefit concerts, thus both reflecting Mutter’s own priorities and offering its players a well-rounded introduction to the life of a professional musician. “Music moves us only when it tells a story”, Mutter says. “And I’m on the trail of the next generations of storytellers.”

Laura Lootens, a winner of the Andrés Segovia Competition in Spain, performs here Castilla, from the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz's Suite Española. This work was originally written for piano, but Laura Lootens has arranged it herself for solo guitar. As a homage to well-known regions and towns of Albéniz's home country, Spain, it is written in a Romantic, national style, and features typical dance rhythms of its corresponding localities.

Born in 1860, Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz was mainly a pianist and wrote primarily for the piano. More than any other musician, he succeeded in incorporating the Spanish guitar idiom and folklore into his style. Thus, for instance, his works contain allusions to rasgueado, a guitar technique that strums all six strings percussively in rapid succession, as we often hear in flamenco. So it is no wonder that many of Albéniz’s piano works have also been performed on the guitar.

Victory at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in October 2021 turned Bruce Liu into a worldwide sensation. Deutsche Grammophon’s live album of his competition recordings was released to rave reviews the following month, and the Canadian-Chinese pianist became an exclusive DG artist in March 2022. Now Bruce Liu, "a pianist with a captivating musical personality" (Financial Times), has recorded his highly anticipated debut studio album, spanning two centuries of French keyboard music. The Paris-born pianist has taken a historical approach in selecting his repertoire, focusing on three French composers who played a central role in the development of keyboard music between the 18th and early 20th centuries: Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-88) and Maurice Ravel (1875-1937).

The album's title reflects both the nature theme that runs throughout the album and Liu's spontaneous style: "The sea is always changing," he notes. "And my approach to the music I play is never fixed." Since winning the Chopin Competition Bruce Liu has become renowned for his breathtaking, charismatic live performances. Recording an entire studio album therefore posed a different challenge, but one he has relished. “For me, it’s in a studio that you can really make your own puzzle,” he explains. “It’s like making a piece of art, putting everything together.”

그리고 오케스트라와의 협연으로 더욱 깊고 풍성한 품격있는 음악이 탄생하였는데, 김영선 음향감독과 김민아 레코딩 프로듀서가 참여하여서 이 같은 세계적인 수준의 사운드를 끌어내었다.

No fewer than ten of this year’s prestigious OPUS KLASSIK awards were presented to Deutsche Grammophon artists. The gala awards ceremony took place on October 8, 2023 at the Konzerthaus Berlin, with music provided by the Konzerthausorchester and its new Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Joana Mallwitz, herself an exclusive DG artist since June this year. Orchestra and conductor were joined on stage at the Konzerthaus by an array of stars from the classical music world, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Víkingur Ólafsson and David Garrett. The ceremony was hosted by actress and television presenter Désirée Nosbusch.

David Garrett is known for reaching new audiences worldwide with everything from classical sonatas to arrangements of rock ballads and film music. His latest DG album, ICONIC – Deluxe Edition, was named Bestseller of the Year. The star violinist took his inspiration for ICONIC from the work of some of his best-known predecessors, recording a personal selection of more than 20 atmospheric miniatures and virtuoso showpieces.

Hailed by Diapason as “striking for its sincerity and authenticity”, Echoes Of Life offered an individual and thought-provoking take on Chopin’s Bach-inspired 24 Préludes, Op. 28. Ott highlighted the works’ timeless nature by framing them with music by 20th- and 21st-century composers, including her own arrangement of fragments of the Lacrimosa from the Mozart Requiem. For the extended edition, she has chosen pieces connected with the music, composers and themes of the original album, but without imposing her own associations on them.

As the pianist explains, since Bach’s Prelude in C major (from The Well-Tempered Clavier) inspired Chopin’s first Prélude, and the works by Francesco Tristano and Chilly Gonzales on Echoes Of Life, it was the obvious starting point for the extended edition. “It appears twice in its full form,” she says, “once on a grand piano, with a sound that embraces the entire room and space, and a second time on a prepared upright piano, in a much closer and intimate setting so one can hear the hammers hit the felt on the strings.”

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Virtuosi wowed the Musikverein.” (Die Presse) As part of a European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today’s finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist’s 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter’s latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Antonio Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian Bach to André Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne.

Anne-Sophie Mutter’s extraordinary gifts were instantly recognised by Herbert von Karajan when she auditioned for him at the age of 13. The legendary conductor became her trusted mentor in the early years of her hugely successful international career. Mutter has since gone on to adopt a significant mentoring role herself, supporting young musicians through the foundation she established in 1997. In 2011, she set up Mutter’s Virtuosi, whose continually changing membership primarily comprises current and former recipients of Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation scholarships. Under her leadership, it tours widely, premieres new works and gives benefit concerts, thus both reflecting Mutter’s own priorities and offering its players a well-rounded introduction to the life of a professional musician. “Music moves us only when it tells a story”, Mutter says. “And I’m on the trail of the next generations of storytellers.”

Joshua Bell & Alan Gilbert: "The Elements" | Opening Night 2023 | NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester

In der Opening Night bringt der diesjährige Artist in Residence Joshua Bell mit dem NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester und Chefdirigent Alan Gilbert eine Uraufführung auf die Bühne: "The Elements - Suite für Orchester und Violine", die Bell bei Jake Heggie, Jennifer Higdon, Edgar Meyer, Jessie Montgomery und Kevin Puts in Auftrag gegeben hat. Die fünf Stücke sind der Erde, dem Wasser, dem Feuer, der Luft und dem Äther gewidmet - den fünf Elementen, die die Grundlage der griechischen Philosophie eines Aristoteles wie auch der traditionellen chinesischen Naturphilosophie und Medizin bilden.
